The Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza was confirmed on a small, domestic flock in Pitkin County in early April 2022. This was the first confirmed domestic case of the disease in Colorado and was likely spread by contact with wild, migratory birds. This is currently not considered a public health threat, but is a large threat to poultry producers. We are advising backyard poultry producers to increase biosecurity measures and avoid contact with wild birds. If you know folks with suspected cases of this disease it is very important that they call the Colorado Department of Agriculture’s State Veterinarian’s Office (24-hour line): 303-869-9130.
